Masked Edit Controls

I wonder when "the Americans" (sorry for making a horribly generalizing statement here) will understand that creating an edit control with a mask

is a thoroughly bad idea.

When is that election-punch hole in card here-look at holes-look at some holes again-flip coin, decide winner-thingy again?

do they have a mask for that too?

"is a thoroughly bad idea." -> strange use of the word "thorough". I used to develop masked edit controls back in 1999. Haven't seen them ever since, until now :).
